5 Superfoods for your Superchild

When I had my first baby, Nicolas a few years back I had to learn so much about this magical thing called motherhood, a full time job, with absolutely no breaks but with the most rewarding gifts, for sure. I’ve been careful about what I eat, how I eat and when since I discovered I had gestational diabetes during my pregnancy before he was born, so I knew I had to focus on giving my baby the best start in life by feeding him with nutrient-rich superfoods.

Mamas, they are key and you’ll learn all about them now.

First of all, I know life can be quite difficult when those delicious cupcakes, cookies, chips and all the not-so-very healthy foods are trending in your kiddos minds, trust me, I’ve been there, and I’m not saying you should remove them completely and forever, but to replace them serving up fun, colorful and healthy options for your little ones they will love, and if you really explain them they are having a “superfood” and how this will benefit them, (like what I did with Nico, telling him Broccoli will give him more muscles and a super night vision) I promise you they will be stoked!

Here are our favorite superfoods we consume every week, raise your hands superchild!

  • Avocados: an incredible option as a first food for your babies, avocados have more potassium than bananas, they slow digestion and are full of monounsaturated fats, folate, vitamin C and K that will help boost brain development. Menu ideas: Mash avocado with a zest of lemon, baby guacamole, avocado smoothie with spinach and green apples.

  • Broccoli: these little green trees (as Nico calls them), contain zillions of antioxidants, fiber and yes, lots of vitamins your kiddos will need while growing. Also, get them used to green veggies, they are both nutritious and delicious. Menu ideas: Steamed broccoli with melted cheese, Green puree with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, Broccoli soup.

  • Eggs: An egg-ceptional superfood and our ultimate favorite, eggs are essential in our diet. They’re packed with almost every vitamin and mineral our kids need for an optimal growth, and yes, they are absolutely delicious! Just keep in mind, not all eggs are created the same way, and with the exact same quality. We always buy Omega 3 enriched or local eggs, they will be more nutritious, and yummy!
Menu ideas: Scrambled eggs with spinach, cheese and ham, Omelette with veggies (and some bacon), Quiche Lorraine.

  • Cauliflower: Iron deficiency is so common among toddlers and babies and we’ve been adding iron-rich foods to compensate for the reduced iron intake they’re used to from breast milk or formula. Besides lots of dark green vegetables and legumes, cauliflower is super packed with minerals and vitamins, including B, C, Potassium and antioxidants. Menu ideas: Parmesan roasted cauliflower, Cauliflower and aged cheddar soup, Mini cauliflower pizzas.

  • Berries: Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries are an essential powerful superfood for your little ones, lowering the cholesterol, fight chronic diseases and increasing memory and concentration, really needed for our kids, right?
Menu ideasHomemade blueberry ice cream, Yogurt with blackberries and blueberries, Strawberry-banana smoothie bowl.

I’m convinced what you eat is who you are, and in the case of our kids, if they eat pretty, they are growing the same way. Along with a good diet and a balanced life aka Superfoods overload, I believe in natural, plant-based remedies to help my little ones when they’re under the weather. What about you?
